November 9 - The New Jersey Devils will battle the Washington Capitals Friday night in Newark, N.J., in a game that will have a hard time matching the action from their last encounter. Washington visited New Jersey on Oct. 25, and that night the Capitals scored the only three goals in the first period, the Devils notched all four in the second and the Capitals scored three in the third for a 6-4 win. Captain Alex Ovechkin -- in pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's goals record -- has scored twice in 11 games for new coach Spencer Carbery. "It's still early and I think younger players and older players are adjusting here," general manager Brian MacLellan told NHL.com regarding Ovechkin. In that game, the Capitals lost a 3-2 lead in the third period and the Panthers scored 15 seconds into overtime for the win.

Devils desperate to correct slow starts vs. Sabres
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( Field Level Media | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
October 26 - It hasn't been a bad start to the season for the New Jersey Devils. The starts to games, however, are another story, and one they'll look to rewrite when they host the Buffalo Sabres on Friday in Newark, N.J. The Devils have been outscored 8-2 in the first period through their six games this season. Sabres coach Don Granato tinkered with his lines last week, putting Thompson between Dylan Cozens and Jordan Greenway. With good performances from Eric Comrie (two games) and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (one game) in his absence, the team won't push him.

The Devils went 2-for-4 on the power play and are 11-for-25 with the man advantage. 300 on the power play -- and finished with 14 shots on goal. You could tell that early, especially that first power play, that it was coming to the cage today. The Capitals are 1-for-16 on the power play, with Ovechkin's goal ending an 0-for-15 skid. Hunter Shepard will make his NHL debut against the Devils while backup Charlie Lindgren remains on the injured list.
